Handmade Dubai chocolate bars with pistachio, kataifi and tahini filling, made in Ireland by Sugar Plum Sweetery

If you've scrolled social media at any point since 2024, you've seen it: a thick chocolate bar snapped in half, a bright green pistachio filling, and that unmistakable crunch. Dubai chocolate.

The craze arrived in Ireland in late 2024, and our Mullingar kitchen hasn't slowed down since. Here's everything you need to know — what it is, where it came from, and where to buy the real handmade thing in Ireland.

What is Dubai chocolate?

Dubai chocolate is a filled chocolate bar with three key ingredients inside:

  • Pistachio cream — smooth, nutty and naturally green.
  • Kataifi pastry — very fine strands of pastry, toasted until golden. This is where the crunch comes from.
  • Tahini — sesame paste, which adds a deeper, slightly savoury note.

All of it is wrapped in a thick shell of milk chocolate. The contrast between creamy filling and crisp pastry is what made it so addictive.

Where did Dubai chocolate come from?

The original bar was created in 2021 by Sarah Hamouda, founder of Fix Dessert Chocolatier in Dubai. Inspired by knafeh, the Middle Eastern pastry dessert, she named her bar "Can't Get Knafeh of It". A viral video in late 2023 sent it around the world, and chocolatiers everywhere started making their own versions.

"Dubai chocolate" is now the name for the style, the way "rocky road" describes a type of treat rather than one brand.

Our Dubai chocolate, made in Mullingar

We launched our own Dubai Chocolate Bar in December 2024. By early 2025, demand had our kitchen running around the clock, and people were driving from Donegal and Wexford to our Mullingar shop to get one. The story was covered by The Irish Times, RTÉ Radio 1 and the Irish Examiner — you can read the coverage on our In The News page.

What makes ours different:

  • Real chocolate, no palm oil. Our milk chocolate has just six ingredients, at least 34% cocoa solids and 21% milk solids.
  • Fillings made from scratch. We toast the kataifi ourselves and fold it through Irish butter, pistachio cream and tahini. No pre-made tubs.
  • Handmade in small batches. Every bar is made by our chocolatiers in Mullingar, so no two look exactly alike.
  • Recyclable packaging. Designed and made in Ireland, gold foil included.

The Sugar Plum Dubai range

The bar started it, but the range has grown:

How to store Dubai chocolate

Keep it somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight, and out of the fridge — cold and moisture dull the chocolate and soften the kataifi. Our bars carry a 6-month best-before date, but the crunch is at its best when fresh.
